Parts of Speech Chart in English Grammar

There are 8 parts of speech in English Grammar. Eight Parts of speech chart is given in this post. However, some grammars claim that there are 9 parts of speech in the English language. In this blog post, the following components have been discussed:

    The 9 parts of speech are as follows:

    • 1)Noun
    • 2)Pronoun

    Parts of Speech Meaning:

    Speech is defined into different categories, known as parts of speech.

    1) Noun

    A noun is the name of a person, place, thing, or idea.

    Person:  Boy, girl, Ahmed, Sara, etc.

    Place: Lahore, city, England, country, etc.

    Things: Table, chair, water, book, etc.

    Idea: Truth, freedom, bravery, length, etc.

    2) Pronoun

    Pronoun = For-a-noun

    A pronoun is a word used in place of a noun.

    Pronouns are sensitive to 1) person 2) number 3) gender 4) case

    3) Adjectives

    A word that adds to the meaning of a noun or pronoun is called an adjective./A word that modifies a noun or pronoun./A word that describes a noun or pronoun.

    Examples:

    Good, bad, long, short, red, wide, two, etc.

    This is a good book.

    I like red color.

    The tail of the parrot is long.

    Two wide feet.

    (good, red, long, and wide are adjectives in the above sentences)

    4) Verbs

    A verb is a word that shows an action or a state of being.

    Examples

    Run (Action)

    Sleep (State of being)

    See (State of Being)

    5) Adverbs

    An adverb is a word that adds to the meaning of a verb, adjective or another adverb.

    Examples:

    Very, extremely, well, really, quite, etc.

    He runs fast. (Fast is an adverb adding to the meaning of the verb “Runs”)

    He runs very fast. (Very is an adverb adding to the meaning of the adverb “fast”)

    He is fast. (Fast is an adjective)

    He is very fast. (Very is an adverb adding to the meaning of the adjective “fast”)

    6) Preposition

    A preposition is a word or group of words used before a noun, pronoun, or noun phrase to show direction, time, place, location, or spatial relationships, or to introduce an object. Some examples of prepositions are words like “in,” “at,” “on,” “of,” and “to.“

    Prepositions in English are highly idiomatic. Although there are some usage rules, much preposition usage is dictated by fixed expressions. In these cases, it is best to memorize the phrase instead of the individual preposition.

    7) Conjunctions

    Conjunctions are words that act as joiners. They join words, phrases, and clauses.

    Examples:

    And, but, although, however, yet, until, so, for, etc.

    8) Interjections

    An interjection is a word or phrase used to express sudden feelings, emotions, or meaning.

    The interjection is a big name for a little word. It refers to short exclamations such as ” Oh! “, ” Um, ” or ” Ah! ” Although they have no real grammatical value, we use them quite often, usually more in speaking than in writing.

    Interjections are usually followed by exclamation marks (!).

    Examples:

    Oh!, Ouch!, Alas!, Hi!, etc.

    9) Determiners

    Determiners are the words used before nouns to provide reference to that noun. The determiners are divided into five categories:

    a) Articles: A, An, The

    b) Possessive Adjectives: My, Your, Our, His, Her, Its, Their

    c) Demonstrative Adjectives: This, That, These, Those

    d) Interrogative Adjectives: Which, What, Whose

    e) Quantifiers: Cardinal numbers like one, two, three, ……, Ordinal numbers like first, second, third, …., other words showing number and quantity e.g. some, more, both, any, every, someone, anybody, etc.
