What is Past Continuous/Progressive Tense?

It shows that at some time in the past, we are in the middle of an action.

Example

I was eating melon in the morning.

(I was in the middle of eating melon in the past time (morning))

Let’s have a look at Past Continuous Tense in Hindi:

यह दर्शाता है कि अतीत में किसी समय हम किसी कार्रवाई के बीच में थे।

yah darshaata hai ki ateet mein kisee samay ham kisee kaarravaee ke beech mein the.

Structure of Past continuous tense:

Affirmative/Positive Sentence

Subject + was/were +1st form of Verb + ing + Object

Negative Sentence

Subject + was/were + not +1st form of Verb + ing + Object

Interrogative Sentence

Was/Were + Subject +1st form of Verb + ing + Object?

Wh Interrogative Sentence

Wh word + Was/Were + Subject +1st form of Verb + ing + Object?

Past Continuous Tense Examples in Hindi:

बच्चा रो रहा था.

bachcha ro raha tha.

ठंडी हवा चल रही थी.

thandee hava chal rahee thee.

छात्र बातें कर रहे थे.

chhaatr baaten kar rahe the.

Past Continuous Tense Examples Hindi to English:

Positive/Affirmative Sentences

The baby was crying.

बच्चा रो रहा था.

bachcha ro raha tha.

The cool breeze was blowing.

ठंडी हवा चल रही थी.

thandee hava chal rahee thee.

The students were talking.

छात्र बातें कर रहे थे.

chhaatr baaten kar rahe the.

Negative Sentences

The teacher was not delivering the lecture.

Ahmed and Ali were not fighting.

Interrogative Sentences

Was she calling you?

Were you trying to imitate him?

Why were they laughing?

Uses of Past Continuous Tense:

  1. To express the background of the story

e.g. The sun was shining and birds were chirping.

Use With: Past Simple Tense

2. Some Past Habits

e.g. She was constantly singing.

Use with: Always, Forever, Constantly, At that time, In those days, etc.

3. Overlapping Action

e.g. I was going to market when I met Ali.

Use With: When + Past Simple + two o’clock, 7 pm, etc.

4. Emphasis on the Length of Action

e.g. I was working in the garden all day.

Use With: All day, All Evening, For hours
